Tara Rani Vrat Katha

In Hinduism, the goddess Tara is the second of the Dasa (ten) Mahavidyas or "Great Wisdom goddesses", and is a form of Shakti, the tantric manifestations of the goddess. The word 'Tara' is derived from the Sanskrit root 'tr', meaning to cross. In many other contemporary Indian languages, the word 'tara' also means star.

King Sparsh was childless after years of marriage. He conducted a Tapa "religious meditation" to appease Devi Mata with hopes of gaining a boon. Mata, eventually, was pleased and blessed that Sparsh shall father two daughters. Soon, his wife was pregnant and in due course gave birth to a beautiful girl. Good omens followed this child. Entire kingdom witnessed divine bliss and prosperity. King's Guru proclaimed that this girl is very lucky as she carries Devi's blessings. She was named Tara. In a few years, king father another daughter. This girl brought forth terrible omens and ill feeling. The guru informed that this carries a curse of past life. King and queen were devastated and refused to believe this. Then, the guru told their past life story.

Long time ago, two sisters were observing a fast of Ekadashi (11th day after new moon). Both sisters were very spiritual and traditionally educated by their parents. While the elder sister had underwent many such fasts, for the younger one this was first experience. Whole day felt much longer to the young girl. In the evening, elder sister gave younger one some money and asked he to buy Puja material from nearby shop. While returning, the famished girl saw a stall of rice balls. She could not control any longer and ate a small piece. However, she was overcome with guilt and threw away remaining food. On returning home, she confessed to her elder sister who consoled her and instructed to apologize to the goddess. What these girls didn't know was that rice was forbidden during Ekadashi fasting. A terrible punishment, as a result of this error, was given to the little sister. She was cursed to be born as a lizard and eat insects in next life. She died instantly and was born as lizard. The elder sister could not accept this. She apologized on behalf of her sister and pleaded to the goddess. Moved by her plight, the Goddess blessed that the girl born as lizard will retain her good educations and spiritual learning. Thus, she will be able to conduct good karma in her life as lizard and transform to human form again. Elder sister worshiped to the goddess all her life and accumulated great karma. She went on to become Tara in her next life.

The little girl, born as lizard, who had retained her education from past life, as divine blessing, went to live in a hermitage where regular yagna and puja were conducted. Very old and learned sage presided this ashram and educated young disciples. One such disciple, who was highly skilled and gifted, had major anger issues. When angered, he became violent and abusive. All his learning was forgotten in fits of anger. The sage tried everything, even reprimanded him but the disciple could not let go of his anger. During one of his anger fits, he badly beat a cow for manuring where he was praying. The sage was hurt by this and exiled this disciple from hermitage. He announced a yagna as a repentance for deed done by his disciple. The disciple on the other hand was furious on his guru and lost all sense of reason. He decided to humiliate the old sage by corrupting the yagna. On completion of yagna, nearby villagers were invited to join the feast. The angry disciple turned himself into a hawk, grabbed a venomous snake and flew over the kitchen. He dropped the snake in vessel of khir (rice pudding) when no one was around.

The young girl, in form of a lizard, witnessed this. She knew that instant death awaited anyone who would eat the khir. She wanted to cry out and warn but could not. So, she took a drastic step. She jumped in to khir the moment cooks came back thus sacrificed her life to save many. Cooks however, were revolted and informed other sages. These sages cursed the lizard that her next life will be of that of a lowest caste and she will clean waste from other's house as a punishment of her crime. Cooks took the vessel of khir in jungle, dig a hole and threw it in. At the bottom, they saw dead snake. They went and inform old guru who instantly realized the whole story. He was filled with regret that a good deed had earned the lizard a curse. However, he requested the goddess to make amends. The Goddess, in reply to his request, announced that the lizard will be born as a princess but will be raised by shudra (low caste). In that life, she shall be able to acquire enough good karma to ensure moksha (liberation from rebirth). Hence, that lizard, who was the younger sister, was born as younger daughter to king Sparsh.

Hearing this story, king was saddened but resigned to fate. He asked for guidance from his guru. Guru asked him to craft a basket of wood, cover it with gems and gold, put the child in it and drop it in river. King followed these instructions. The girl, in gold & gems embedded wooden basked drifted to a distant shore. A bramhin was purifying himself in the riven and saw the basket. He was tempted by gold and gems but could not retrieve the basket on his own. Hence, a shudra was called and asked to do so. The bramhin promised that the shudra could keep whatever was inside the basket. The shudra retrived it and handed it to bramhin. He was delighted beyond measure as the basket held what he craved the most, a child. Taking the girl child from basket he ran home and shared the whole story with his wife. Together they raised this girl named Rukmin.

Tara and Rukmin both grew up at different households with different level of education but both worshiped the Goddess reverently. In time, both girls married to same city. Tara was queen while Rukmin was married to the stableboy. She joined as chambermaid to the new queen. Both of them recognized each other the instant they met. Tara embraced her little sister and kept her close. But none could share this secret with anyone for they were afraid of consequence. One day Tara organized jag-raata "night long session of Devi's bhajan" in honor of goddess. Rukmin, who was with her, was very moved and promised to conduct similar jag-raata if she was blessed with child. Goddess was pleased with Rukmin and granted her wish. Rukmin however forgot the promise made to the goddess. Six years passed but Rukmin did not organize jag-raata. Her only son fell terribly ill and could not be restored to health by any means. Rukmin was devastated and went to her elder sister Tara. Tara prayed to goddess for health of her sister's son. Goddess informed Tara about the mistake of Rukmin. Realizing it, Rukmin swore that she will organize the jag-raata on same night.

Rukmin went from one bramhin to another, one temple to other but nobody was ready to perform the ceremony. An old bramhin, told her that no one would come to her place as she was a shudra and guided that she should drop the money at goddess temple where jag-raata could be held on her behalf. Rukmin could not accept that. Distraught, she went to Tara and asked her help. Tara promised Rukmin that she would go to her home and conduct the prayers herself in honor of goddess. Rukmin went home to prepare for the puja. Tara's husband, the king, wasn't happy with idea of his wife going in to a shudra household. He, in order to stop her subtly, told Tara that he was ill and wanted to rest in her lap. As a wife she couldn't refuse him but her mind was occupied in silent prayers so that she could fulfill her promise to Rukmin. As evening passed, king fell into deep sleep. Tara tried to go out but realized that soldiers were posted all over castle to stop her. She saw a high window in the room as only way out. She felt light as a feather when she dangles out of window through silk sari. She jumped to the ground and ran towards Rukmin's home. Bandits tried to stop her, pull at her clothes and jewelry but failed. One bandit got hold of her bangle, another her scarf while one caught her earring. All of them turned blind and were glued to the same stop. Tara reached and started prayers at her sister's home.

King woke up suddenly and searched for his wife. Understanding the situation, he immediately went to Rukmin's home with a platoon. Prayers however had ended by then so the king returned with his wife to their palace. Rukmin had fulfilled her promise to Devi and appeased her. She waited for liberation, her moksha.

Back in palace, Tara had a huge fight with the king. He argued that she had polluted herself by entering a household of a person of low caste. Tara identified Rukmin as her younger sister and told him the whole story. King was disbelieving and said how could you remember so much of past lives. "Through the grace of Devi Maa" she replied. King didn't believe her and asked for proof of the power of Devi. Tara told that such proves require a great sacrifice. That king will have to present the Devi what he loved most. King agreed and Tara started the Puja. King sacrificed his favorite pet in honour of Devi. The meat however turned stale when put in front of her. Tara told the king to think again about what he loved most and only that will be accepted as sacrifice by the Devi. King went on to sacrificing all his favorite pets, his best horse, even his most liked concubine but each time the sacrifice was rejected. Tara taunted him that he didn't have courage to realize and sacrifice what he most truly loved. King knew the answer by now, he went to his son's room with a sword. King cut his son into pieces, put them on a plate and covered it with red cloth. Sacrifice of the king was accepted now. King was distraught with grief and refused to partake the Prasad of his son's flesh. He ran back to his room and saw that his son was sitting on the bed. The king was confused and thought he was hallucinating. Tara told him it was not the case. They both asked their son about what happened to which he claimed to have no recollection. "I was playing in lap of a beautiful mother and she fed me many sweets", is all the young prince remembered. King bowed his head to the Devi Maa and together him and his queen continued to pray to her till the end of their days.
